When most guys (and gals) begin planning their marriage proposal, they instantly think of limousines, hot air balloons, fancy dinners and expensive champagne.

The RoMANtic's Guide to Popping the Question is a new book that challenges the myth that one has to open RoMANtic's Guidetheir wallet to show what is in ones heart. A nationwide search for the most romantic proposals brought in over 7300 stories and the best 101 showed credit cards and bank accounts have little impact on romance.

The grand prize winner was a guy who creatively used a $10 piece of hardware and a $7 bathroom fixture to pop the question to his girlfriend. The other winning stories invested a lot of heart and sentiment into their proposals, but not a lot of cash.

Author Michael Webb, who is a popular talk show guest, has long been teaching men and women how to get back to the romance of days gone by. The best part about Webb's book is that it will actually save you money on your proposal by showing ways you can express your love without opening your wallet.

I asked Laura on March 8th, 2008.
I did it quietly and kept it between just the two of us. The big concert plans still happened but it was a gift instead of an event.  I'm so glad I followed my instincts and kept it quiet because if I had waited until the concert like I had originally planned the engagement would have been ruined.

Thanks to all of you for helping me plan out our engagement.
Want details of the proposal? Details of the concert below.

A message from the future Mrs. Daniel Pooler:
Today, March 8, 2008 is the greatest day EVER!!! My true love asked me to marry him!!!!!! (of course I said yes, duh) I am so overwhelmed and happy I just cannot describe it.

March 28th 2008 - Finally the "BIG" planned day.  We flew the company airplane up to Orlando for the weekend. My plans were to get us backstage with Avenenged Sevenfold (A7X) at the Taste of Chaos concert 2008 months prior to this I started speaking with the management company of the band and I was told to head to will call and the VIP tickets would be waiting for me.  We made it to the concert venue by 4:30PM, and to my surprise will call had nothing waiting for us. I called Ashley the VP of marketing for A7X and she started making phone calls to see what the confusion was all about.  Unfortunately she was having trouble reaching, Jim the tour manager, due to cell phone coverage and our evening was off to a sarcastically great start.  We waited out front for 30 minutes while Ashley tried to call the venue and see if anyone can get her in touch with Jim, she kept getting put through to voicemail by the venue thinking she was a crazy fan, I continued to sit and stress.  Laura and I decide to head around the building to the press entrance and see if we can help Ashley help us by finding Jim and giving him her message about not being able to reach him.  We talked to a few security guards and 15 minutes later we were talking to Jim.  Luckily I decided to print out some emails before we left just so I had some proof of the correspondence between myself and the management company. I handed the emails to Jim hoping to spark his memory or have a reason to ask the band if they had agreed to this like the emails stated.  He left with the printed emails and went in the venue to figure it all out.  Another 10 minutes later Jim arrives with 2 "Guest" braclets in hand, tells me to go through the front of the venue and meet him on the side of the stage.  Now I'm wondering: Which side? When? How long do I wait? I started to ask him a few questions and he just shrugged me off like I'm supposed to know what to do.  So we're happy we are getting somewhere but still very confused as to what to do.  I understand there are all kinds of crazy fans out there but in our situation and with the communication prior I thought this would be taken a little more seriously than it was. I mean as far as they knew I was going to propose in front of the band?

I mentioned once to the management that I wanted to propose at the show, either before, during or after the show but I wanted Matt (M.Shadows), the lead singer of A7X to be present and months ago he said via email, through his managment company that, and I quote, "He is down."  I didn't know if that meant he was down with me doing it before, during or after the show. Knowing that A7X isn't a Richard Marx, Brian Adams or Mariah Carey type of concert I figured during the concert would be a little out of the question, unless I did it while biting the head off a bat like Ozzy Osbourne or something similiar I would be sure to get boo'ed off stage.  I was guessing Matt was approving a pre show meeting and a quick proposal in their dressing room backstage or hanging in the bus for 10 minutes and doing it there.

Back to the concert.  We head around front with our "Guest" wrist bands and...

The perfect proposal isn't always Limos and fancy props, it doesn't always have to cost a fortune. Does it?

If there is anything I've learned since starting http://www.ourweddingproposal.com back in September 2007 is that you can't think too hard at the proposal itself. I was thinking of this magic day for months and wanted everything to be so perfect but you can't always plan too far ahead. Some might argue this point but with my girlfriends situation its very difficult to plan too far in advance. She has full time work, full time school, helps out her grandparents and still has time to spend with me. I had all these huge plans to propose and I started to realize it doesn't really matter how its done as long as the commitment is there. I love her with all my heart and can't wait to have her as my wife. Does it really matter that I follow through with these huge plans that will probably give the secret out anyway? She started finding out too much as it was... For those of you planning out a big proposal you can't plan too much or you'll give out the secret too soon.  You need to be flexible and you need to be sure she wants a big drawn out engagement.

I created this website (http://www.ourweddingproposal.com) to share engagement story's with the world hoping to mix and match a few story's to create an even more amazing one.  I'm not regretting creating the site since it helped me come to realize what my "Perfect" proposal was going to be and it will in the future help others learn the same lesson.

I made her smile and she was overwhelmed with joy when I popped the question to her.  I knew it would be just as important to her if I did it on top of the Rockefeller Center, in an airplane, or took her to the first place we met.

I've decided that the planning and the stress involved isn't whats important. I haven't been able to sleep for months because I've been thinking about how this proposal is going to work out and if its going to be the "perfect" one . The important thing is the promise that you will love this person for the rest of your life. I'm ready to make that commitment.

So in closing I'd have to say that the "Perfect" proposal depends completely on each individual couple. In my situation big fancy dinners and gifts will not make my commitment any more important. To some, the big dinners and the fancy props will make a difference so you need to understand your future wife and make that decision for yourself.

I wanted it to be a surprise and by not planning a huge setup this was the biggest surprise of her life.

My boyfriend and I were going to spend our two year anniversary at the Newport Aquarium, right across the bridge from Cincinnati. I was so excited because I had never been there before! When we got to the aquarium, we spent most of the day walking around looking at the fish, sharks and turtles. I was most excited for 2:30 to come, because we had tickets for The Penguin Encounter. This is a tour in which you get to meet three blackfoot South African Penguins: Paula, Simon, and Randy. My favorite animal is a penguin, so I was so excited to get to play with real penguins. When we got to the meeting place for the tour, my boyfriend and I were the only ones there. I was surprised, but I didn't think much of it.

I met Amy in April 2005 at a women's rugby toga party at URI on a Tuesday that I almost didn't go to, but knew the scorn I'd get from my friends (especially Brian, my brother-in-law to be) for not going to a college party that was "all chicks dude!". So I went, and met Amy through my suave discussion of organic chemistry.

After a few weeks we started dating, and at Jake Johnson's 2005 4th of July party I told Amy I was falling in love with her, and she replied "and I you".

A week later I accepted a "6-month" contract offer in San Jose, California, and on July 18th, moved to Cali. Amy promised she'd wait for me, and agreed that I should take the job offer and escape the perpetual doldrums and depression of working at General Dynamics, it was the right thing to do.

After 8 months and countless 9-hour trips above the flyover states to see each other, I realized that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. Or, at least I was pretty sure I did, and living together (in California) for the summer of 2006 would help me make up my mind. It definitely did, it was the best summer of my life thus far.

In early June 2006 I went on a backpacking trip with my father in into the Grand Canyon for a few days, the spot was quite remote:

It was a 4 hour hike into the canyon to Horseshoe Mesa, and about 1500 vertical.......

Having trouble picking out the perfect ring? What if she picked out the exact ring she wanted? How's this for the best article of the century! Just let your future wife pick from the internet diamond stores! There are so many online that let you create your own ring. She can pick everything for details and you will know exactly which ring to get! I used bluenile.com even though they did deny my affiliate application!
http://www.bluenile.com/all_settings.asp?filter_id=1&track=design_state&setting_search=1

I believe your future fiancee should know your planning to propose but it should still be a secret. Using this method of picking out the perfect ring she gets exactly what she wants and you don't have to go to the store and try on rings for a day or two. Once you take the time to visit the jewelry store she is going to expect a ring real soon. Using the internet makes it more of a dream and not reality just yet!

Another option is to have a fund set aside for the ring and pick up a promise ring of some sort. Something she might wear after the real ring shows up. You could give her the pre engagement ring as an engagement ring and then break the news to her that this is just a filler ring and she has $X to spend on the real ring. This way she gets the ring she wants. Remember it will be on her finger for the rest of her life!
